July 28, 2006: A scaffolding collapse at the North Church on during a fast-moving electrical storm Friday, damaged vehicles, clogged rush-hour traffic and littered the heart of Market Square with metal wreckage and the new spire's beams.

$1M needed for spire A group of community leaders are hoping to raise $1 million to help repair a city icon.
The Market Square Steeple Fund wants to make sure the 150-year-old steeple atop North Church is "preserved and forever maintained," members of the new nonprofit organization announced Wednesday.

Council to consider Steeple building-permit exemption The Market Square Steeple Fund Advisory Committee will ask the council to waive the building permit fee of the $1.5 million project to restore the steeple of the North Church. The permit is expected to be in excess of $12,000. Because of the historical significance of the steeple, City Manager John Bohenko will recommend the fee be waived.
